El Territorio de Guam is located in Micronesia, 1,500 miles southeast of Tokyo. The time difference between here and there is 15 hours. The country itself is 46 miles long, four to eight miles wide, and 212 square miles. Its capital is Hagåtna, the former Agana, and its motto is “Where America’s Day Begins.” Guam has a federal constitutional government, led by a popularly elected governor, our president, and a unicameral 15 member legislature. Their current governor is Felix Perez Camacho. The population of Guam is 170,000 people and the population density is about 795 people per square mile. 38% of the people in Guam speak English, 22% speak Chamorro (the language of the native people), 22% Philippine, 7% Pacific Islander, 7% Asian, and 3% speak other. The religion is about four-fifths Roman Catholic and the rest is mixed. Popular sports in Guam are grey hound racing and fishing, but visitors often like to scuba dive and golf. Two famous people who were born in Guam are Yolanda Tolentino, a Broadway performer, and Donovan Patton, Joe from Blue’s Clues. Guam has a unique culture, involving the native Chamorro people. The traditional dress of those people resembles a loincloth and consists of flowing fabric. The main food in Guam is all types of seafood, rice, breadfruit, and taro. Their national holiday is Discovery Day, which is the first Monday in March. Like most countries, Guam has some racial divisions. Back in the 1970’s, there was tension between the native Chamorro people and the Filipinos, but today there only remains slight unease between indigenous groups and islanders from Federate States of Micronesia. The economy in Guam is mostly tourism and some is the U.S. military bases and federal spending. They Import petroleum, petroleum products, food, and manufactured goods.
