I have done many things which are very memorable and I consider them as great achievements in my life. If I were to select one to be my greatest achievement, I would select the occasion when I went to Vietnam to do an Overseas Service Learning Project. In Nov 2010, I went to Gia Bac, Vietnam, to help with the existing restoration project and the building of a proper IT infrastructures in Vietnam. We hope that through reforestation, we would be able to further and strengthen sustainable agricultural practices that will result in the protection of biodiversity and the environment. Through the implementation of IT infrastructure, we hope that the villagers will be able to use the internet effectively to further their learning. Furthermore, we taught them the basics in the English language. English is a universal language and can empower the villagers, aiding them in moving out of the poverty cycle. Throughout the trip, we face several obstacles such as language barriers with the Vietnamese villagers. In order to overcome this, I had to learn basic Vietnamese language and find translation for the English words we were supposed to teach them. As Gia Bac is one of the poorest village in Vietnam, we had to make do with the poor living conditions. We also had to work long hours in order to set up the hardware of the computer learning centre in Gia Bac. As our main objective is to improve the lives of the villagers in Gia Bac, we put aside our fears and concerns and got out of our comfort zone to live the life of the locals in Gia Bac. I learnt not to complain about the tough life in Gia Bac, but to be grateful for the wonderful life I had in Singapore and that it is time for me to do my part to help the less fortunate.
