The Grand Palace The Grand palace is an area with buildings at the heart of Bangkok. The Palace was used by the kings of siam (Thailand) since 1782. The people living in this residence were the King, royal government and also the king’s court up until 1925. The present king of today is not staying at the grand palace, he is living at a palace called Chitralada Palace in Bangkok aswell. But of course, the Grand palace is still being used for tourism and special events. Several royal ceremonies and state functions are held within the walls of the palace threw out the year. The Grand Palace has an area of 218,400 sq meters and is surrounded by walls that was built in 1782. The length of the four walls together is an estimate of 1,900 meters. The Grand palace has government offices and the chapel royal of the emerald Buddha is beside the royal residences. When Siam restored law and order after the fall of Ayutthaya the monarch lived in Thonburi on the west side of the river. Which was located on Rama I when ascending the throne. He then built new public monuments such as fortifications, monastaries and a new palace which was located in Chao Phraya. The palace was not only used as a residence but also as offices, such as various ministries. The palace then became known as the grand palace. This was in the early foundation of Bangkok. As for the architecture in the grand palace. The palace was strictly and purely thai style when built in 1782. This massive complex has been under many transformations during its 200 years of life. King Rama III introduced chinese architectural designs. King Rama V added western architectural designs. The result after all of these years is a cross of designs from different cultures. For example the Chakri Maha Prasat. The building has quite a western look, because of its palladian walls combined with classical columns. All
