Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS), interferes with normal activities on a daily basis, whether or not a person with narcolepsy has sufficient sleep at night. People with EDS often experience mental cloudiness, a lack of energy and concentration, memory lapses, a depressed mood, and possibly extreme exhaustion. Cataplexy consists of a sudden loss of muscle tone that leads to feelings of weakness and a loss of voluntary muscle control. It can cause symptoms ranging from slurred speech to total body collapse, depending on the muscles involved, and is often triggered by intense emotions such as surprise, laughter, or anger. Sleep Paralysis is the temporary inability to move or speak while falling asleep or waking up.

Insomnia is when a person has a hard time falling asleep, staying asleep, or a disturbance in the quality of sleep a person gets that will make them feel they are not well rested when they do wake. Insomnia is more common today then we think, about 10% of adults suffer from severe insomnia. Lack of sleep may cause someone to have no motivation, mood swings, and not be able to function to their full potential. Insomnia has also been known to cause depression, anxiety, and stress, which in turn can cause other health problems.
Sleep is also the optimum time and physiological state for cell growth and repair (Harkreader, 2007), yet states of impaired skin integrity, muscle, nerve, or organ damage usually causes pain, which impairs sleep. It is important, therefore, to pay close attention to the assessment of the clients sleep health in nursing practice. Thorough assessment of the clients sleep patterns can identify impaired sleep function, which can in turn set the stage for client-appropriate nursing interventions and communication with the rest of the collaborative health care team, such as the primary physician, for other interventions that may be needed. As important as it is to do a thorough holistic assessment of the patient, some areas of assessment can prove to be more challenging than others in gaining accurate information. Sleep is one of them.

State of Consciousness: Sleep Deprivation Circadian rhythm is a regular biological rhythm with a period of approximately 24 hours and is fundamental adaptation. Circadian rhythm is associated with sleep deprivation because of many different factors. When circadian rhythms are disturbed it throws off our biological clocks and hormones, body temperatures, and digestive cycles. When you lose at least an hour of sleep every night, week after week and month after month it makes it more difficult for a person to pay attention and to remember things. It also causes the reaction time to slow down, sometimes behavior becomes unpredictable, ability to make decisions decline.
When you're sleep deprived and overwhelmed, you may have trouble handling even minor problems. You may be anxious about your ability to care for a newborn. You may feel less attractive or struggle with your sense of identity. You may feel that you've lost control over your life. Any of these factors can contribute to postpartum depression.
