Good and bad teaching experiences

As an individual with my own background and experience, I bring certain beliefs, assumptions, knowledge, attitudes and values to teachings which were imparted to me on my educational journey thus far. As a learner I have been affected by teachers for many years, these experiences have combined to give me a quite well elaborated set of ideas about good and bad teaching and learning. I can vividly reflect on a nurturing experience as a learner which I think was responsible for me becoming a teacher. My standard five teacher was someone I wanted to emulate. He was more than a teacher to me, he was like a father. I distinctly remember when my class was going to take part in an Ole Mas competition, I was very shy and inhibited and was afraid to go on stage. He did not make fun of me as the other teachers did. He coaxed me and showed compassion by sending his daughter with me to portray our item together. I felt so special all because my teacher had a caring heart. This simple act of kindness triggered my passion for teaching. I was very grateful for that experience which shaped and molded me into the individual that I am today. My students sometimes call me mummy, which puts a smile on my face because as a child I thought of my teacher as daddy. There have not been many ‘bad’ or negative experiences in my life as a learner; however, there is one particular incident which comes to mind. This experience occurred while I was a student at the Teachers’ Training College. My Psychology lecturer was someone whom I was intimidated by. Her mere presence exuded perfection. Iwas so unfortunate to have her supervise my teaching practicum.. Just knowing I had her gave me constipation. Yes it seems funny but it’s the truth.
