Goat Tying In the wonderful world of rodeo there are many events that are likely to get a person’s heart racing. One of my personal favorites is goat tying because of the excitement it can offer. In goat tying the competitor must ride down to the end of the arena, jump off their horse, and tie down the goat. Although it may seem simple it is more complicated and complex then it seems. When it comes down to it goat tying can be very difficult for some people, but also very fun after you learn how to do it. To complete this event successfully you must complete three basic steps: preparing yourself and your horse for the run, warming up, and the run itself. Also there are a few things that can go wrong during your run that you want to try and avoid if possible. First comes the most basic step which is saddling up the horse. It is the simplest part and there are only a few basic steps to getting it done properly and safe. To begin this process you brush the horse to get rid of any mud, dirt or burrs that will irritate the horse while you are competing. Next you must put on the saddle pad and the saddle and making sure that it is secure. Once the saddle is on you tighten up the front and back cinches making sure they aren’t too loose or too tight. Then you put on the horses bell boot, sport boots, and bridal to finish tacking your horse. To get yourself prepared for your run you must have the proper attire which includes a long sleeve button up shirt, jeans, belt, cowboy hat, boots that will easily slip out of your stirrups, and your number. You also will need a nylon goat string that is about four feet long. To warm up your horse you take them through a walk, trot and then lope to get their muscles warmed up so they don’t injure themselves kind of like athletes do.
