Goal Assesment For Oral Communications

Shaun Coffey January 14, 2012 Oral Communications I am a believer that public speaking of any kind is a pretty stressful experience. I also find myself wondering why I think it’s so stressful? I mean you get up in front of people you don’t know and are asked to deliver information or presentations that you don’t know if anyone will appreciate or gain anything from. That in it self is stressful and the stress for me is the root cause of the pressure. After our first couple of mini’s I am realizing more and more that the stress and pressure is a self induced implosion because the most common thing to do is shut down loose eye contact and create a bubble. Trouble is as much of a bubble or wall I can put up its still see through. So my goals for this class are to remain calm try to relax as much as possible minimize the pressure and stress by realizing that it has a start and an end. I think to improve my public speaking and communication skills I’ll need to figure out why these things occur. I did some research online and have come up with three principles I think will carry me through the class and make me better at public speaking One is to always remain calm. Even when you have a negative experience you almost always can use it to your advantage. The second is to stay true to myself. Being humble and admitting my fears openly and honestly. And the third is even in a time where I mess up or trip over a word forget a paragraph or just shut down the audience generally wants to see the presenter succeed and 9 times out of 10 will over look the slip ups and make a judgment based on the presentation as a whole. I think when I can get through a presentation without sweating, looking like a 10 ton elephant is about to run me over or like I’m about to jump out of a plane with no parachute an remain calm and relaxed I will then have reached my goal of
