AssignmentTopic: "To What Extent can Tshepho be conceptualized as a ‘Global Citizen’?" Abstract: The concept of a ‘Global Citizen’ has become a highly disscussed topic amoungst researchers. This comes as a direct result to globalization. Globalization is known for the formation of mass culture, a global citizen thus becomes part of this mass culture moving a way from traditional and cultural specific norms and gravitating to the norms and ideologies of the dominating elite with in mass culture. This results in the loss of cultural difference all around the world. This essay aims to look at the extent to which the life of a child living in a South African township can be considered a ‘Global citizen’. it is clear that western norms are predominant in all parts of the world this will be disscussed as well as critiqued by looking at western influences limitations with in a South African contex. “Globalization is a process in which worldwide economic, political, cultural and social relations have become increasingly mediated across time and space” (Rantanen, 2005: 8) There is no question that our world is changing. Our once big world is rapidly shrinking; it would not unfair to suggest that the cause of these changes could in fact be the introduction of globalisation with in our social world. Globalization is not a new concept. The world economy has become increasingly interdependent, and this has been occurring for many yeas now. It is however, only in recent decades that the process of globalization has accelerated to the level we have it at now, this is due to a variety of factors, but important ones include improved trade, increased labor and capital mobility and improved technology.
