What is perfection? Does the perfect woman really have to be five feet ten inches tall and weigh one hundred and ten pounds? Does the perfect man have to be the best at baseball or as smart as Albert Einstein? How do we know perfection is not the complete opposite? Why are we so obsessed with finding perfection in a human being? Our exploration into finding perfection is only destroying our value of life, hurting society physically and emotionally, and creating more diversity and prejudice in our communities.
Searching for perfection in a human being is destroying our value on life. People are beginning to try and create what they think is the “perfect” human, which now makes it seem as if we are only breeding and not having children because they are your flesh and blood. In Jessica Cohen’s “Grade A: the Market for a Yale Woman’s Egg”, Jessica describes her experience of trying to qualify to be an egg donor, people would think a woman would only need to have a healthy past and that can be donated. In Jessica’s case though, she had to meet those qualifications and other specifications as well (Cohen 114). The couple that needed a donor made demands of her to be a certain height, Jewish heritage, athletic, attractive, and even a SAT score of one thousand five hundred (Cohen 115). Now if someone were to have a child with his or her partner he or she cannot choose what traits their child retains, so why should one be able to try and make the perfect human through qualification? It is as if one will make the perfect child and anything less is unacceptable, but why? Shouldn’t your child be loved no matter what?
Perfection in appearance, athletic ability and intelligence has only hurt our society physically and mentally. People hear stories about girls wanting to look like the models on the cover of “Cosmopolitan” magazine so badly that they do not eat or they throw up after their little Happy Meals from McDonalds.
