When Proctor had to go to the court to get his wife out of being accused of upholding witchcraft he eventually confess to his sins he committed. Miller manifests this ideology through the application of literary and stage techniques. A key character in the play which demonstrates this ideology is Abigail Williams. Her unscrupulous nature promotes the use of propaganda to shift suspicion among people and to manipulate by the power of hysteria. From the beginning of the play Abigail enforces power of speech stirring hysteria to devoid any towards her. Continuously throughout the text she performs acts of deception which tragically condemn others to death just to cover her lies.
This quote “[…] Let either of you breathe a word and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” Shows her desperation and truly violent mind while she tries to control the mistake she’s made, but to control this mistake she must control those around her who know of it. No one would dare to expose her if they feared so terribly, Abigail uses this to her advantage. At the end of the trials Abigail was beginning to be revealed by townspeople who found out that she was the main accuser. But it falls, it falls!” With these chilling and ominous words, Abigail’s twisted sense of revenge rings hollow in Arthur Miller’s terrifying play, The Crucible. A masterpiece of its time, The Crucible brings forth the true horrors man is capable of: deception and vengefulness. No character presents these values as well as Abigail, whose lust and heartbreak for John Proctor results in a homicidal goose chase. Because of her hate towards Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth, Abigail creates demented tales, directed at abolishing the “problem.” Though Abigail’s wild canards seem quite obtuse in civilization today, at the time her acts fell to justification.
The Villain A villain is someone capable of a crime or wickedness. Curley's wife demonstrates that she is a villain by causing emotional harm to others. She talks to other guys and start disputes between the workers and Curley on various occasions. She also does not hold back when it comes to insulting people she does not hold back and always makes sure that everyone is beneath her. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck Curley's wife demonstrates multiple time that she is a villain and in many ways is the cause of her own death.
However, it is difficult to believe that Cathy chose to be evil to the extreme that Steinbeck depicts. He described every moment of her life as being devoted to bringing other people down, and pulling herself up. She achieved this through devious schemes that trapped many important men in compromising positions, and also by clever plots that allowed her to take over one of the most successful whore houses in Salinas. Cathy was a secretive person who went to great measures to cover her past and her feelings. Conflict certainly exposes the true qualities of a person that might have been kept deep inside never to be revealed, however due to the pressure of a bad situation the ‘real’ person is displayed. McCarthyism has been shown in the play “The Crucible”, which was practiced by Abigail. McCarthyism is paranoia and finding scapegoats and blaming innocent people for things they did not do. Many lives were ruined because of this. In the Crucible, Abigail is tormented by the fact that she had been caught out having an affair with John Proctor.
