Gifts and gift giving Nowadays, it is customary to celebrate joyful events with gifts giving or exchanging. And giving gifts is an important way to build and deepen relationships. The act of gifts giving can be fun and exciting. There are, however, certain unspoken rules of etiquette that should be followed. Here are some basic guidelines to help keep you on track: The first one is when we should give gifts. Gifts are usually given during special holidays, for example Christmas. And you can also show your appreciations for special invitations or events by sending a gift. However, never give a gift in some occasions like job interview or business meeting. Actually we express our thoughts and feelings by giving gifts, which is a way of showing that you care and love them. The second thing we should consider is what kind of gifts we should give. Avoid gifts of great value, as they may embarrass the receiver and may be declined. Besides, in china, do not give knives and scissors as they symbolize breaking the relationship. You should also avoid giving clocks because the phrase “giving a clock” sounds like “hoping someone die” in Chinese pronunciation, but it does not apply to watches, just clocks. When we are choosing gifts, there are two factors we should consider. One is the situation. For example, if you have been invited to a wedding, the most thoughtful gifts are those that reflect the giver’s unique expression of well-wishes for a happy marriage; While if you are just invited to a personal party, a bottle of wine or flowers can be your choice.
