Gastroesophageal reflux disease
(GERD)

GERD is a very common disease that 20% of Americans have, it is caused by a leak in the lower part of the esophagus and upper part of the stomach. It is caused when the lower esophageal sphincter is abnormally relaxed.   This is a chronic symptom of muscosal damage caused by stomach acid coming up from the stomach into the esophagus. This causes frequent heartburn and discomfort behind the sternum. Some symptoms of GERD include heartburn (which can be mistaking for chest pain), nausea, and pain in the middle chest.   When acid reflux backs into the esophagus in a patient with GERD, the nerve fibers in the esophagus are   stimulated, which causes heartburn. This is usally described as burning in the middle chest, it can start in the upper abdominal area and travels as far as up the neck.   Heartburn is more common after meals and when a person is lying down, lying down tends to make it worse, a lot of patients report being awaking in the middle of the night with heartburn or chest pain. This may sound like something that is minor and comfortable, however it can cause several problems such as ulcers, and strictures of the esophagus, Barretts esophagus, cough, and asthmia.   It can also lead to inflammation of the throat and laryngeal, inflammation or infection of the lungs and a collection of fluid in the sinus and middle ear. There are some foods you would want to avoid if you have GERD, this list include chocolate, peppermint, fried and fatty foods, tomato products, food and drinks that contain caffeine, alcohol products, onions, garlic, mustard, and many more. Treatment for GERD can be as simple as lifestyle changes or medications. There are several test that can be preformed to test for GERD. The esophageal acid test is considered the Gold Standard test for GERD, this test is preformed by measureing the amount of time the acid stays in the esophagus.
