“Geraldo No Last Name” The story begins with a young lady meeting a boy named “Geraldo. That’s all. Green pants and Saturday Shirt.” (Paragraph 1) Very simply put, this paragraph would imply that Miran, the young lady in the story, did not know Geraldo only his name and the clothes he wore. The main theme of “Geraldo No Last Name” revolves around the lifestyles of the Mexican wetbacks “Just another wetback. You know the kind.” (Paragraph 5) Geraldo is in the United States illegally which conflicts with the laws of our country. Many Mexicans choose to cross our borders daily and many have suffered for their choices. When a tragedy befalls them regardless of how responsible we as Americans desire to be we are prevented from doing just that. When Miran was in the hospital following Geraldo being hit by a car she was questioned “That’s what she said again and again. Once to the hospital people and twice to the police. No address. No Name.” (Paragraph 3) The Mexicans as part of their illegal status could trust no one with their real identity. Miran questions why she is so concerned “why it mattered, the hours and hours, for somebody she didn’t even know”. (Paragraph 4) At this particular point in the story the reader realizes that if Miran is not there and does not care who would. She then goes further in her thinking “But what difference does it make? He wasn’t anything to her”. (Paragraph5) However she still is sitting in the hospital until three am. There was no one Geraldo chose a live of solitude when he left his family in Mexico to cross the border into America. The story tells that “They never saw the kitchenettes. They never knew about the two room flats and sleeping rooms he rented”. (Paragraph 8) They being the doctors, police, employers, family and so forth would not ever see the life he lived away from home, work or otherwise. This
