Genetically Modified Foods Are Safe

"The reports have broadly concluded that genetically modified plants are not only safe but in many respects friendlier to the environment than non-engineered crops grown via continental farming methods." (Mestel 2) GMO's are safe but they should be labeled, people have the right to know the ingredients in their food. However, genetically modified foods could have a number of health risks. I feel that genetically modified foods are safe to eat. These modifications allow farmers to frow crops with easier weed control and fewer pest-killing chemicals. Genetically modified foods that have been fed to animals show no negative effect and they also require less fertilizer and have other useful traits such as being more nutritious and resistant to drought. (Mestel 2) I feel that genetically modified foods are safe to eat. Genetically modifying food has been broadly examined and have had thorough investigations by independent panels convened by the National Academy of Science. (Mestel 2) "genetically modified corn, soy, potato, rice and wheat had no ill effects on the rats, cows, mice, quails, chicken, pigs, and sheep that ate them. Growth, development, blood, tissue structure, urine chemistry and organ and body weights were normal, according to the report in Food and Chemical Toxicology." (Mestel 2) If all these animals have ate the genetically modified food and everything seems normal why should we be scared? They have been tested and studied extensively. Normal results have been shown and if having genetically modified food means we can have everything we need all year around rather than seasonally I don't see a negative side of that. "Now they want to insert genes into plants to make them more nutritious." (Mestel 2) Also, these modifications allow farmers to grow crops with easier weed control and fewer pest-killing chemicals.
