“We are heroes.” Are there really any heroes in the novel? To be a hero is to be courageous and selfless by risking your own life for the sake of others by choice. In wars heroes can be created out of soldiers who are nobodies, because of the conditions and situations they are put under. In the novel Generals Die in Bed every soldier is called a hero for fighting for their country. But during war they are the opposite of courageous and selfless, with a single moto of “Each man is for himself.” The narrator leaves his friends behind, because he knows that if he were to stop he would be dead. The soldiers are addressed as heroes though when they first embark on their journey, with most of them too drunk to realise what they are getting into. The narrator is then put through one of the greatest tests in the book in which he kills for the very first time, and when the battalion raids an abandoned town for food and supplies reverting to stealing. Heroes are those who are proud to be what they are, to know what they are heading into and unafraid of what is ahead of them. Generals Die in Bed shows how for the narrator and his fellow soldiers, this is quite the opposite. The narrator first introduces himself and the others in the night before they leave. Most of the mean are drunk, with “a heavy odour of stale booze and women in the air.” With most of the men drinking away the thought of what is ahead, they all turn to bullying and taunting. This is mainly focused upon Anderson, a devout believer in the bible and against most of the practices the men are undertaking. He fires up at the men, telling them that they are “sinning in the eyes of the lord.” He shows courage when facing all his fellow soldiers and insulting their practices. However he is silenced when he realises how outmatched he is. By the end of the next day, the sinking feeling of what the soldiers are
