Work Description A General Surgeon is highly specialized on performing surgery on the digestive tract, skin, breast, and hernias. Sub-specialities in trauma surgery, laproscopic surgery, and vascular surgery. 2. Working Conditions A General Surgeon generally work in a well-lighted, sterile environment while performing surgery. Most work in hospitals and often stand for long periods of time. 3. Lifestyle Considerations Many Surgeons work long, irregular hours. Surgeons must travel frequently, between office to hospital. 4. Places of Employment A General Surgeon would have no problem finding a job in a hospital, and or clinic. Part-time employment is not available for this kind of occupation. Volunteering in this field is not commmon. 5. Rewards Many of the “rewards” that one might find in this career is like any other medical occupation, the satisfaction that you made someones life a little easier is enough . 6. Drawbacks One drawback that I dicovered while researching this career is that the education required is at least 12 years of postsecondary education. 7. Personal Qualities or Characteristics Some characteristics that takes to pursue a career in General Surgery are strong communication skills, stress tolerance, and the ability to make quick decisions. 8. Employment Outlook The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that careers in General Surgery is expected to grow 22% from 2008-2018, which is a more rapid growth when compared to other occupations. 9. Future Advancement Robotic Surgery is a new and exciting emerging technology that is taking the surgical profession by storm. Up to this point, however, Surgical Robotics is still in its infancy and its current practice is mostly confined to small surgical procedures. 10.
