Garments industry contribution in terms of GDP is highly remarkable; it has reached 13 percent of GDP which was only about 3 percent in 1991 (Bangladesh Export Statistics). It also plays a key role to promote the development of other key sectors of the economy like banking, insurance, shipping, hotel, tourism, road transportation, railway container services, etc. The sector has created employment opportunities for about two million people of which 80 percent are women who mostly come from rural areas. Thus the industry helps in the country’s social development, women empowerment and poverty alleviation. One of the key advantages of the garment industry is its cheap labor force, which provides a competitive edge over its competitors.
There is a clear division line separating the north and south which displays the difference in development level of nations. The north is predominantly more developed than the south, with massively wealthy nations like the America; consequently there is less poverty in the north and people generally have a higher standard of living. In comparison, the south is dominated by poor countries which have low levels of development. Most of the people in the south have a lower standard of living due to high poverty rates; however there are some exceptions to this trend like Australia. Evidently there is an unequal relationship between the north and south, which could be mainly due to the fact many of the southern countries were owned by the north in the past.
Brittney Little Mr. Rogan English 111 7 November 2013 Honduras: The Murder Capital of the World In Honduras over 60% of the population live in poverty. It is one of the poorest countries in the American continent (“This is Honduras”). This economic stagnation has had far-reaching effects on the Honduran population, from poor education, healthcare, and joblessness to increased theft, and more severe criminal acts such as illegal drug trade, sexual assault, human trafficking, and murder. The impacts of foreign mission activity are noticeable and much needed, but they alone are not enough to change the direction of the Honduran economic and social situation. Sporadic foreign aid also does little to help Honduras on the scale necessary to
Enemy tribes were often forced to live together, which resulted in civil wars over the years. These wars, however, were not the only effects that European imperialism had on Africa. Some effects were great for the Europeans and Africans, but others only benefited the mother countries at the colonists’ expense. Document 1 clearly illustrates how the mother countries benefited at the expense of the
Treatment of African Americans as second class citizens was still bad regarding economics in the north, but not as severe as in the south. For example, a mass migration of brought two million blacks to northern cities to seek out better economic opportunities. Also, unemployment in the north fell from almost one million to around 150000 by 1945. This was due to the creation of jobs in factories during World War 2, when it became easier for blacks to get jobs (although not as easy as it was for whites). In the
It was intended to last only one year after the civil but lasted longer due to surprising support and need for its services. This was a very large help to black Americans as it gave them basic living conditions even thought they had very little money after living as slaves. Sharecropping was a system where a landowner allowed a tenant to use some of their land in return for some of the crop produced there. This, for many black Americans, would have been like slavery again except that they could not get whipped for working slowly, but it would show off in their pay of crops. The advantages of this were that ex-slaves would have a chance of a job, and the fact that women could work on arable land, where the rights would only be available to male.
Firstly although much has improved there still is discrimination and inequalities in the labour market. It is important to understand that income is the basis of an individual’s participation in society. According to Gender-Agenda (2009) women who work full-time earn, on average, 17% less per hour than men working full-time. For women who work part-time, the gap in pay 38% per
The Dirty Little Secret: Poverty In America Jane A. Easter The current reality in the United States of America is that the level of disparity between classes is growing and not in a good way. The small portion of the rich are getting richer and the number of poor is increasing creating a larger gap between the previous middle class and the lower class. The other reality is that it is a “don’t ask, don’t tell” society. Though studies, census data and other overwhelming proof is all around us, it is one of the least talked about issues. The classes by race and gender continue to have disparate realities across the country.
While this is a median, meaning there are figures above and below $5, the pay and wealth gap is a tragic reality for women of color (The pay gap, 2013). From the same study, researchers determine the wages of the different social classes. “Recent census data shows that while white women earn 77 cents on the dollar compared to men, black women earn 64 cents and Latinas earn 55 cents compared to the earnings of white men” (The pay gap, 2013). Another instance is from the debate over African American importance to history. A quote from Franklin Roosevelt said, “If we do not learn from past mistakes, history is doomed to repeat itself” (History Importance, 2011).
In addition to the “historical legacy of low wages, personal and organizational and institutionalized racism,” blacks have been inherently faced with the difficulty to strive in terms of obtaining a decent education as well as better paid work, resulting in a “sedimentation” to the lowest economic class in America’s social structure (Oliver and Shapiro 1995: 202). Not many people realize however, that “the accumulation of wealth for some whites is ultimately tied to the poverty of wealth for most blacks” (Oliver and Shapiro 1995:202). Every time discrimination is used towards blacks
