Gender inequalities do exist in regards to status, power and prestige between men and women in the Caribbean. It exists in the economic system (workforce), religion, political parties and other major institutions. According to Webster dictionary, gender inequality is defined as an unequal treatment or perceptions of individual based on their gender. Status however is defined as a social or professional position, condition or standing to which varying degrees of responsibility, privilege and esteem are attached. Prestige is a high standing achieved through success or influence or wealth. Power is the ability or capacity to perform or act efficiently. Men were given more rights than women in all of these areas, prestige, power and status but however there are signs of women bridging the gap between the male counterparts in some areas, example education and career. Women are not always treated as good as men, they face lots of unfairness when it comes to gender inequalities. In most Caribbean families, inequality exists between men and women on the basis of income. Men are the main ones who provide the family with its needs, weather in a nuclear or a single parent family. As a result men are the ones who decide on how money is spent and how things are done. The husband rules the family, he seldom consults her in the decision making process about things pertaining to the house. Example, what kind of outfit she can wear, the places she can go and also whether she can use birth control or not. In marriages the man enjoys higher status and would raise the status of a woman after wading her. The society offer more respect and honor to a woman on account of her marriage. Not only gender inequality exists on the basis of income it also exists on the basis of status. Marxist looks at domestic labor as well as wage; he says that male demands that women perform domestic labor
