Generational and Gender Differences and how they affect group performance Dennis Buffkin December 11, 2013 Writing an essay about generational differences is difficult for someone in my age group. With all the changes I have experienced in technology and the advances in “time saving” inventions finding the perfect niche, just the right angle of approach, was the worst part. I considered interviewing someone younger than myself, but they all grew up with the “new” I watched come in. Older? They have the same experiences I have. Then, like a lightening bolt, it hit me: Group assignments and/or team work and how various generations and genders work together to achieve a common goal. When working as a group or team, the purpose is to create something educational or to combine ideas through critical thinking to solve a problem . Many times in life, at school and later on the job, we encounter diverse mixes of personalities, ages, races and cultures. Age and gender diversity is everywhere, found in small corner businesses as well as fortune 500 companies, and is one of the most important challenges facing the student body on most college campuses. This diverse mix of personalities, gender, race, experience, and culture is what helps to make a team successful. However, a team lacking in diversity often has limitations on creativity, viewpoints and ideas. This paper will look at generational and gender diversity and how each, combined with expertise and experience all play an integral part in the construction of a successful “team.” High performance teams incorporate these differences and use them and the variety of values each individual contributes to reach the team goal.
