Paola Álvarez Guízar 6/06/2013 Assignment 1 Gattaca Gattaca is a science fiction film written and directed by Andrew Niccol in 1997. In this movie it stars Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. In 1997 the film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Art Direction and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score. The movie at the beginning takes places in the United States where a couple has a baby named Vincent who has problems with his heart and also has myopia. When he was born the doctor told his parents that he would only live 30.2 years. When his brother, named Aton, born his parents used genetic selection because they were afraid that he had the same problems that Vincent. One day while playing a game called chicken Vincent wins for the first time and this makes him take the decision to go to Gattaca which is a place where they are trained to go to space. The problem is that in this place they don`t accept people with health problems. Jerome, a former swimming star with a genetic profile "second to none", who had been injured in a car accident, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down, listens the problem that Vincent has and helps him. Vincent uses Jerome DNA in blood, hair, tissue, and urine samples to pass screening. After several difficulties the struggle to pass Vincent achieves going to space and Jerome commits suicide leaving him a lot of blood and tissues as if he had 2 lives. This movie has a very good message because it makes you realize that when you want something and you fight for it like Vincent did you can achieve whatever goal you want. Besides, for me the movie has really good special effects despite the time it was made like when he puts blood in his fingerprint. Gattaca is movie that has very exciting parts and it also leaves you a very good message. I would highly recommend this movie because its exciting to watch it and
