GATTACA depicts a future in which society strives for ‘the right kind of people’ concerning intellectual superiority, humanity and personality among the personnel is disregarded, leading to the slow destruction of all things human. Throughout the film, the director employs techniques such as symbols, interior, external settings, lighting, narration and cinematography to help guide the viewer’s perspective to understand the future that Niccol envisions. Symbols are involved in most scenes regarding destiny and fate, much of this is made up of religious icons, although circles are portrayed also. Depicted in the opening scene, ‘Consider God’s handiwork..’ appears directly after emphasizing the DNA coding used to make up the title and credits, which prepares the viewer for both science and religion to be portrayed. Examples of religion are seen at Vincent’s birth as his mother holds a cross, as well as Vincent’s attempts to rid himself of excess DNA, comparing to baptism. Those who are invalid are also known as god-children, and are seen as a lower class, as if the society is being run as a caste system, however even those seen as superior have, as Vincent describes, “the burden of perfection.” Circles are also seen often over the course of the film, primarily in the interior settings, used as another way to show the perfectionism being portrayed. They can be seen in the windows of most building, as well as the piano scene, in which the camera’s view allows the audience to see the circular shape of the room. The opening scene includes a close up of falling hairs and skin and is the first example of cinematography and emphasizes the importance of body cells and DNA in a world dedicated to genetic perfection.
