FUNCTIONAL HEALTH PATTERN ASSESSMENT Name: Institution: Course: Instructor: Introduction Theodore Twombley has been separated from his wife for a period of about a year. He works as a letter writer. After the break up, Theodore becomes withdrawn. He finds it hard to get into another relationships. We see him as a man of deep psychological scars and emotional conflict, torn between being stuck in the past with memories of his ex-wife and moving on to a relationship with a new mate. Gordon’s Functional Health pattern assessment Marjorie Gordon (1987) suggested 11 functional health patterns to enable a methodical data collection approach, and to enable the nurse determine: * Health Perception and Health Management. Theodore Twombley is of visibly good health. We don’t see much of what he eats, apart from where we see him purchasing a cheese burger and a soda from a street vendor. He is also seemingly fit. On health management, he is seen to live quite a sedentary life. Because of his work as a letter writer, he is stationed at his desk for the whole day. He is also engaged in video games a lot. Apart from occasional strolls around the city and his neighbourhood, we don’t really see him making much effort to work out. * Nutrition and Metabolism. We don’t really see much of Theodore’s diet apart from the occasion where he purchases a cheese burger and soda from the street. * Elimination. This is not apparent but we can safely assume that the client’s excretory functions are normal. * Exercise and activity. Apart from occasional strolls, Theodore doesn’t really exercise much. He even choses to take the lift over the stairs every time. * Perception and Cognition. These functions are evidently good as Theodore goes about his day to day life normally. * Theodore’s sleep and rest patterns are occasionally interrupted by his emotional
