From Type-writers to Word-processors Introduction In the following essay I will review/discuss the advantages and disadvantages between typewriters and today’s computer operated word processors. Although PC computers and Notepad computers have by far taken over typewriter use, they are still very imperfect and can be quite faulty sometimes, this is not discounting the fact that typewriters aren’t perfect either, both have their faults and both have their perks, and some of these faults and perks will be reviewed in the following. My positions in this essay will be that word-processors and PCs are more powerful tools. Similarities Firstly, type-writers and PCs (baring word-processors) bare two similarities, that is they both are used to create documents. Secondly they both use a keyboard with the QWERTY layout. The QWERTY design was especially designed to make typing more difficult and less efficient so that it would minimize the keys from jamming against each other during type-writer use. We still use the QWERTY layout today because it could take up to decades to correct universal usage of this layout. Type-writers Now I will start pointing out and discussing some key features both of them have, starting with type-writers. Typewriters will not run out of battery power as they do not run on it, they have 0% stored energy in them. They also cannot contract viruses and so do not require spyware (if the computer has internet or receiving connection from an external source. E.g. Usb. Due to typewriters not actually having a power source and only having one function, they do not need to be ‘booted up’ and can be used as soon as you have adjusted your paper and made sure you have ink suitable for the machine. Continuing from needing ink, that’s actually all that typewriters need to ‘print’ (aside from the actual person and paper), but on the other hand word-processors
