Essay #2 Outline I. Introduction: The questions of what, how, and why you eat food are all factors of the way you are looked upon in your society. Individuals are socially affected by the choices they make within their society. By making the right choices and following “rules” set by the people, they will be one with the people. Introductory statements: These rules govern socially acceptable behavior and consist of mainly keeping loyalty to the morality of community, following customs, adhering to the food traditions, and keeping current to the changing roles. If those people choose not to abide by the socially set “rules”, they will be disowned and out casted by the community. Thesis statement: Food affects social division in society by one’s obedience to local guidelines of fundamentals and etiquette. II. BODY a. TS: Food dictated by the morality of communities. CD: For example, in the movie, Chocolat by Lasse Hallstrom, Little Sefie says, “So through good times and bad, famine and feast, the villages held fast to their traditions” (Hallstrom). CM: No matter what hardships the small, rural French village came to, they did not have seconds thoughts about whether or not to change the way they ate. They kept their traditions of fasting to keep their religious faith. CM: The reason for that is because the morals of the community was to stay true to their fasting for Godly works. If one was not to follow this custom, the community would question their morality. CD: Similarly, the excerpt, The Wages of Sin by Francine Prose states that modern America notions that “…addiction to food is so visible in its consequences, the obese find themselves ridiculed, rejected, and repulsed by many of those who do not over indulged.” (Prose 197).
