Ike was a huge economic burden to the U.S. and “estimates suggest Ike may become one of the costliest hurricanes on record” (FEMA 10). Hurricanes are known for causing severe structural damage to houses, but also have an effect on many businesses as well. Many people had to evacuate and be out of work for up to two weeks due to power outage and debris. Also, some businesses were damaged by flooding and wind, which caused the loss of crucial business equipment. Businesses were flooded along the Texas coast and lost all of their vital technology such as computers, telephones, and other office equipment.
The Buffalo Creek Flood killed many people in the February of 1972. After the flood, Pittston not only didn’t admit the responsibility, but also claimed it as a natural disaster, called it “an act of god,” and later on claimed and blamed that the Buffalo Mining Company was a separate division altogether and that Pittston couldn’t be responsible for its actions. Furthermore, since Pittston rushed to settle the survivors with only 4000 dollars for the survivors from the flood, the survivors are angry with that. So it triggered the survivors to look for a law firm that is Arnold & Porter, and to represent them and seek for justice. After the flood, many people lose everything, and they had no choice but to accept these offers because they couldn’t wait until the lawsuit to follow through, not even guarantee that they will be compensated or win lawsuits.
This includes exposure to light, pollution, weathering, erosion, and people walking through the sites, treasure hunters and vandalism. The damage done to Pompeii alone is expected to cost over 300 million US dollars to conserve the town, although due to the severe lack of funding this can be considered to be an impossible task. As both Pompeii and Herculaneum were initially excavated in the 18th century they have been standing exposed to the elements for hundreds of years, and so all structures have been affected by general deterioration over time. Excavations have left structures unstable and are on the verge of collapse. For example on November 6th 2010 the house of the Gladiators collapsed due to general deterioration and also heavy rainfall – see source B.
It’s a waste because clean water is not an abundant resource and it will eventually run out. The amount of water used per year for fracking needs to be monitored. Earlier this year in Northern Ohio, over 400,000 residents were left without safe water due to widespread contamination. Residents were even advised not to shower due to the
It wiped out entire families while others were forced to dig the graves of their own family members. Morgues were so overwhelmed by the morality rates that bodies began to pile. Business in the U.S. came to a halt because of the amount workers stricken with the flu. Mail was not delivered and trash piled up due to sick workers. Crops could not be harvested because there were not enough workers and even state and local health departments shut down as a result.
Meanwhile, hotels had emptied and foot traffic was down at many retail stores.” People were loosing money because of the spill. The economy faced a drop in their financial balance. Many people left the county in order to find a place they could utilize water. Other people felt as if they were trapped in their own homes because several of the restaurants were closed. On Black Thursday, The Wall Street Crash of 1929, October 24 also known as the Great Crash was terrible, it was the worse stock market crash ever. The market crash was one of the major causes that led to the Great Depression. There was a huge crowd of people trying to withdrew there life saving but couldn't. They were left with loans and debt they couldn’t pay. Two Months after the crash , stockholders had lost more than $40 billion dollars.
In 2000 there was a vaccine shortage because quality control issues caused a 6-8 week delay in vaccine delivery. That year supplies were distributed unevenly and prices doubled as a cause of the perceived increase in demand. In 2001 only about two thirds of the produced doses were available at the beginning of the flu season. Then again in 2003 the amount of vaccine supplied did not meet the demand for vaccinations because 4 million doses were destroyed and 87 million were inappropriate for that season’s flu strain. Not taking any action in this case has proven to be a bad decision as was quickly learned in 2004.
Iluta Urka History 220 The panic of 1873 set off a depression that lasted six years, the longest and most severe that Americans had yet suffered. Thousands of businesses went bankrupt; millions of people lost their jobs, and as usually occurs, voters blamed the party in power for their economic woes. The primary cause of the price depression in the United States was the tight monetary policy that the US followed to get back to the gold standard after the US Civil War. The US government was taking money out of circulation to achieve this goal; therefore there was less available money to facilitate trade. Because of the Panic of 1873, governments depegged their currencies, to save money.
Going on its third year after the Wall Street Crash, the economy faced several obstacles in gaining ease. These impacts include: 12 million people out of work, 12,000 people being unemployed everyday, 20,000 companies bankrupt, 1616 banks bankrupt, 1/20 farmers evicted, and 23,000 people who have committed suicide(highest ever). In having no system to benefit the unemployed, some people starved to death. For some cases, men considered setting fires in forest to have temporary employment as fire fighters. Since no one was able to afford animals, farmers had to kill them off.
