It is a very important process and is used to enable individuals with learning difficulties and disabilities as a way to increase their independence and self-determination. The term 'person-centred care' does exactly what it says - it essentially places the person at the heart of everything that the care worker and the care setting do. The individual's needs and emotions are the focal point, and any difficulties are resolved in the individual’s best interests. It places the person at the centre of all - thinking, discussions, processes and procedures.

Good communication can prevent misunderstanding and mismatched expectations. There are a number of reasons why people communicate, and they all play an important role. These are as follows: • People communicate in order to give or provide information, for instance to be able to share important information so that people can work and function together in a sufficient way • People communicate to seek information, by asking questions to someone who has more knowledge of the subject. • People communicate to express their emotions like courage or fear, joy or sorrow, satisfaction or disappointment with appropriate gestures and words. • People communicate to pass on the knowledge and to teach.
The journey that a person takes in life similar to Santiago’s in The Alchemist clearly illustrates the factors that contribute towards one’s identity. The relationships established during this journey also play a part in establishing a person’s identity. The positive and negative experiences in life along with the friendships established also plays a key role in making a person’s identity. Determination has a huge impact on our identity. Determination is focusing on our goal and putting all the effort in our power to achieve it.

The purpose of person-centred approach during counselling is to increase ones self –esteem, whilst being open about new experiences allowing one to find out where they belong and to be contented with life. Where as the mindfulness approach is to gradually build a foundation of equanimity and clarity on a day-to-day basis. Both the person centred and mindfulness approaches to counselling are designed to help individuals who are suffering with problems such as fear and sadness. They both work around the concept of dealing with feelings whilst in the here and now instead of dwelling on them at a later date.
