Nathan’s realize that he could never be able to do what the surf men were doing, but he helped the baby and the injured sailor because he learned what to do in the medical books. We instantly were assisted by the other firefighters that were arriving. When the next engine company arrived on location the firefighters and I from Company 12 darted inside to put water on the areas that could not be accessed from the outside. Steadily more firefighters were arriving as more water was being placed onto the raging flames. As the flames roamed throughout the whole house the firefighters and I slowly had to evacuate the interior. Multiple hoses had been deployed and were whistling as the water flew through the nozzles.

After dunking the boy’s head underwater to make sure that he was dead, they poured acid on his face (so that he would be hard to identify) then stuffed his body into a drainpipe.
Richard Ford’s “Optimists” tells the story of Frank, the protagonist, who is learning to realize that the most important things in life can change suddenly without notice and without recovery. Frank is a boy of fifteen years old whose father, Roy Brinson, works for the Great Northern Railway. One day Roy comes home from work unexpectedly after he sees a man get caught under the train and hopelessly watches him die. His wife comforts him while one of the guests that are over their house scorns him for not trying harder to save the man’s life. Roy is aggravated and ends up killing the man with a hard hit to the chest, changing his and his family’s lives forever.

With the help of a doctor, he darkens his skin. He shaves his head and plunges into the poor, Negro areas of New Orleans. He stays in gross hotels, eats very little, and cannot find a job even though he is educated.
The creature announces in a German accent that he is the Angel of the Odd - and that he is responsible for causing such strange events. The man, unconvinced, drives the angel away and takes an alcohol-induced nap. Instead of a 25-minute nap, he wakes up two hours later, having missed an appointment to renew his fire insurance. Ironically, his house has caught fire and his only escape is out a window using a ladder the crowd below has provided for him. As he steps down, a hog brushes against the ladder, causing the narrator to fall and fracture his arm.
