The Lord of the flies had unrealistic ending when a navy officer, deux ex machina, saves the boys from the island. In chapter 12, Jacks tribe is hunting Ralph down ready to kill him, but just when we begin to start doubting his survival, a military figure finds him. Throughout the novel there has been many references to military “ like a bomb” (46) the reason they make reference to the military is because war is also savage and uncivilized just like the boys. At the beginning of the novel Ralph proposes to make a fire so that boats passing by would come to save them “ if a ship comes near the island they may not notice us(..) We must make a fire” (38). In the final chapter the hazard uncontrolled fire that Jacks hunters made to kill Ralph is what led to their survival “we saw your smoke” (201).
After this feat Caesar went back to Rome. When Caesar was a young man, he went to the island of Rhodes to learn oratory. While on his way to the island, he was captured by pirates and the pirates demanded a ransom of gold in order for Caesar to live. “When messengers were sent for the money, Caesar promised himself that he would hang his captors someday. When he was released he collected a naval force then found the pirates, and killed them(Bruns 23-34).” This ordeal shows that Caesar had a lot of influence for a private citizen holding no power in a political office.

In Conclusion, the readers felt suspense when Rainsford fell off his boat, found general Zaroff’s home on Ship-Trap Island, and ironically beat General Zaroff in hunting. Those were all examples that proved that Richard Connell, Author of “The Most Dangerous Game” used suspense to develop his short story.

"Heard how Grendel filled night with horror and quickly commanded a boat fitted out, proclaiming that he'd go to that famous king, would sail across the sea to Hrothgar (Lines 112- 115)." Beowulf relied on his strength, quick thinking, and wits to defeat this monster.
