Assessment 1 – Clip Analysis How does director Lewin Fitzhamon use both monstration and narration to construct and clearly convey the narrative of Rescued By Rover? Rescued By Rover was released at a time where film as a medium for entertainment was becoming increasingly popular therefore more effort was being put into advancing film technology and films were getting longer. This resulted in narrative becoming a stronger aspect of films therefore filmmakers began to think of how to tell their story without audible vocals which also made continuity between shots important as this represented the flow of the story. André Gaudreault’s article Film, Narrative, Narration details the evolving concept of narrative that came with the development of film as a medium and within it he uses a very interesting quote, ‘The message should place a subject (either animate or inanimate) at a time t, then a time t+n, and what becomes of the subject at the moment t + n should follow from the predicates characterising it at that moment t.’ – (Brémond) Simply put, if an object is shown and the object itself or the circumstances around said object differ from the original state then you have a narrative. Therefore ‘It seems then, that any film compromising one shot is a narrative, whatever its level of narrative development.’ – (Gaudreault), which could apply to almost any film made, so it is necessary to delve deeper into the concept of narrative to better understand the type of narrative exhibited in Resued by Rover that tells a story. A single shot can show a narrative development and whilst narrative films are generally composed of several shots, one cannot simply place several single shots of narrative development together and have a complete narrative, you will just get a montage of events.
