They had tightened their requirements because careers like doctors, lawyers, and engineers did as well. They wanted to improve the teaching department by only hiring the best of the best. “And the increased years in teacher education furthered the socialization of prospective teachers into the occupational identity that was promoted by school administrators.” (Rousmaniere, 34) Teachers were paid more than nurses and clerical jobs. They also had equal pay with the males workers and were also promised their jobs after marriage and childbirth. Changing attitude towards women in Britain society helped women achieve the vote in 1918. It can be argued that women achieved the vote as they were beginning to be seen as making more intelligent decisions. The education of women had improved with universal education for boys and girls from 1870’s and women were more increasingly attending university. Women were also entering ‘white collar’ office jobs as well as traditional ones like nursing which proved they were able to be trusted with the vote. Arguably women achieved the vote as the social position of women was improving which helped erode male prejudices against them.
Education is also one of the main influences on role allocation within society; allocating people to the most appropriate jobs for their talent, using examinations and their results from these. Durkheim views the education system as an institution that can create social solidarity. This is done by teaching students about the common norms and values of the British culture through the national and hidden curriculum, this enables people to establish a common view on society as a whole, therefore, in theory, creating a more harmonic society. In addition to this, schools create a miniature society, teaching students to cooperate, follow rules and respect their seniors. Parson views the education system as being meritocratic, enabling everyone to have equal opportunities, and success being down to individual desire to succeed and ability.
This very much complicated the assumption that women should marry. A series of female educational pioneers had also emerged and their efforts formed part of a much wider movement of campaigners who sought to bring women equal rights to study, work, own property and vote. This resulted in a great number of changes in the lives of women2. Women had started to gain a voice in politics. This was a big change as, before this period, women hadn’t been able to put forth ideas to even challenge legislation let alone contribute to the making of new laws.
Alice Walker writes that the women led armies, head-ragged generals”, in these few lines it is clear that Walker was in absolute awe of women strength, by comparing women to soldiers, she is specifically implying that they are strong, wise, and powerful. Walker extends this metaphor when she says that these soldiers of women more” across mined field's Booby-trapped Ditches... to discover books desk a place for us.” Alice implies that women had to fight through obstacles, and fight their battles in order to make sure their ultimately succeed and have a better life than they were able to have. In these metaphors Alice is also giving these women stereotypically manly characteristics, in these early times women were not allowed nor were they expected to be soldiers. In the poem “Women” admiration is used, the writer clearly expressed the contracts between the generations, with a sense of humility. Alice also disclosed her present position and standing, based upon the strength of her mother and others like her.
