Discuss the theme of family, as presented by Heaney in ‘Digging’ and ‘Follower’. The poems Digging and Follower by Seamus Heaney both are powerful expressions of the poet's admiration and respect for his father. Heaney strongly stresses his relationship with his father by creating a forceful comparison between himself and his dad and by doing so raises another important issue that is present throughout both poems, the significance of change. However, despite the depiction of the father in both poems seems quite similar at first glance, it later is evident that there are nevertheless certain differences between the two images created. Follower and Digging both give a clear account of Heaney's feelings towards his father with particular emphasis on the poet's response to the physical labour of his father.
Seamus Heaney uses various ways to explore the theme of family life in his poems. The poems, 'digging' and 'follower' specifically explore this theme, 'Digging' is about Heaney's search for his family history, and he seems to be digging into the past for old memories and his ancestral roots and is also about the admiration he has for his ancestors. 'Follower' on the other hand is about the roles in his family and the relationship between his father and him and his disappointment at not being able to possess the same skills as him. Heaney shows a great deal of admiration for his father and grandfather's skill. This is shown in the way Heaney describes them and their vocation.
One of the most intriguing aspects of The Odyssey is the relationship between Odysseus and Telemakhos, his son. In The Odyssey, the father is proud of his son, and the son is likewise proud of his father, who has earned an enviable reputation as a warrior who defended their honor bravely. We see that the father-son affection is achieved only through distance through most of the Books. Odysseus and Telemakhos spend more time apart than they do together, and it is through distance that they develop admiration and love for one another. The German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, quoted
This gives us the impression that the narrator feels like his father is very strong and experienced at his job. This is stressed by the fact that a lot of positive adjectives about his father’s body are used. An example is that he describes his shadow as ‘broad’ and his shoulders as ‘globed’, which both give us the feeling that he has a very big build and is very strong. We perhaps get the feeling that the father is amazing at what he does due to the fact that the narrator describes what he used to be like and then what his father used to be like. It’s as if he is saying that he was useless and always relied on his dad, whereas his father was doing a great deal of work while maintaining his role of a father.
Critique about Robert Kennedy eulogy Ted Kennedy´s eulogy of Robert Kennedy is an emotional speech in which Robert Kennedy´s life and experiences were expressed. The speech delivery was good; Ted explained the view of Robert Kennedy about life and society, and his eulogy was elaborated but hard to be understood by the common public. However, focusing and analyzing on his speech lead to a better understanding. His voice is very direct, and persuasive; in other words, he has a good use of voice. In some parts of his speech, he has expressed such powerful emotions toward his brother, making the audience feel what the speaker felt during his brother´s assassination.
He believes that by imitating his father’s actions on the farm will enable him to soon take over the role, although he learns how skilled the work is. In the first stanza we are introduced in first person narrative with Heaney’s use of ‘My’, this suggests that he is expressing his father as some precious possession. This clearly displays the real bond between these two characters and helps to give us an insight

A Father’s Love The poem “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden is a result of the speaker’s reflection on his past experiences with his father. Hayden shows all the little things the father did for his family and how the speaker took them for granted. Looking back, the speaker now realizes and understands what the father had really gone through for him. The descriptions Hayden uses express both directly and indirectly the idea of unseen love. Hayden goes into detailed explanations of examples of the father’s devoted love.
