Question: Feasibility of alternative energy sources to replace fossil fuels. Alternative energy sources are more affordable than fossil fuels and therefore more appealing especially to lower-income families. Prices of fossil fuels have soared over the years. This may be because our population has exploded over the years, having reached 7 billion in 2011, which may well mean that there is a greater demand for these fossil fuels. However, in the meantime, our Earth has also started to run out of these fuels to meet our rising demand. Fossil fuels are finite and take millions of years to form. This has resulted in cases like the price of oil, in which a barrel which cost US$25 10 years back could now cost US$144! This is causing lower-income families to have to pay more for what they use, putting a strain on their already-tight financial resources. Unlike fossil fuels, alternative energies such as solar energy, wind energy and hydroelectricity are infinite due to the fact that they are replaced naturally over a relatively short period of time. These alternative energy sources are therefore relatively much cheaper, thus it is attractive to lower-income families who are unable to catch up with the ever-rising prices. Although Less-Developed Countries, with their emphasis on rapid industralisation, would find it hard juggling whether to spend their limited financial resources on setting up alternative energies or on other existing problems such as exploding population, rapid industralisation etc, the sign of these Less-Developed Countries putting effort on building up alternative energy sources look promising. This is mainly due to the fact that the families currently living in these countries are mostly poor and cannot afford high utility bills. Less-Developed Countries would be willing to take this risky step if there is a genuine desire to let these families to
