For the first question, I think that the symbolic significant being surfer is white culture and privilege. 1. What symbolic significance did being a surfer have for Lopez and his friends? In L.A. Jack Lopez and his friends had this thing about being surfers, they all collected the magazine "Surfer Quarterly". Sheldon, Jack and Tom called themselves surfers even though they rarely made it to the beach. For them, to be considered a surfer you had to wear baggy shorts, large Penney's Town craft T-shirts, to go barefoot and carry "Surfer Quarterly" in their pockets. Everyone around town dressed like a surfer so Jack and his friends felt the need to dress the same. They always wanted to be surfers but never actually went. 2.
