FC PORTO THE MONEY MAKING MACHINE Champions League success is Europe’s most renowned piece of silverware in the modern game. Whoever lifts it, their name goes down into history, never forgotten. FC Porto is one of those teams who have managed to achieve this feat, while being managed by ‘The Special One’ Jose Mourinho, in the 2003/04 Season. Since that historic feat, they haven’t won it since. However their dominance in their league has been outstanding and other trophies have been lifted by the team from Portugal. But it’s not just trophies that have been acquired since that Champions League Win. A reputation has been yielded, and this reputation is a very proud one to have. Known by many, FC Porto is ‘The Money Making Machine’. Since the 03/04 season, they have made a staggering €586 million in transfers alone. This is an unbelievable amount of money, and other renowned ‘business’ teams such as Arsenal, don’t come close to this huge sum of money. But how did this happen? Luck? There are a few reasons why this happened to FC Porto, and the timing was key to the money coming in. Once Jose Mourinho had left, and gone to London club Chelsea, he bought a few players along with him. He brought Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira for his own, new team. This came to a combined total of €79 million. That’s nearly a seventh of their €586 million bought by Chelsea alone.
