Engl 101 Date 10/27/14 FAST FOOD IN ADDIS ABABA Which African country will be the next target of western fast food companies? Well, mentioning one of the biggest fast food companies in the world, KFC, the African business news website, wrote, “Ethiopia and its 85-million population could be the next African market to get Kentucky Fried Chicken; Pizza Hut may not be far behind”(qtd. In Dana).Amazingly, already fast food is being a big deal in the capital. People in Addis Ababa (capital of Ethiopia) used to eat healthy foods. Mostly serials and vegetables are organic, especially the gluten free Ethiopian cultural food called Enjera. Today a lot of people in Addis Ababa prefer to eat fast food or street food. The main reasons why fast food is being preferred in Addis Ababa include western cultural influence, life style change because of the fast economic growth, and opening of new colleges which are the main target for fast food restaurant owners. The first reason for the introduction and promotion of fast food in Addis Ababa is the Westerns cultural influence due to globalization. For example many of therecentlyopened famous fast food restaurants like, Sishu burger, My burger, Pizburg and Oh Canada caffe and restaurants are owned by Diaspora Investors who came from mostly United states, Canada, or Europe with the new fast food culture. Among these fast food restaurants, recently Oh Canada Coffee and Restaurant has got a big cover on one of the few English magazines in Ethiopia, Fortune.After the writer explained about the location and amount of money (over $ 50,000)spent on the restaurant, he explains the owner’s background as follows “after spending 22 years in Canada, Lily, decided to return to Ethiopia to put her expertise to use” (qtd.
