Assignment 1 Grand Canyon University: MGT-655 Operations Management Assignment 1 For this project I selected the restaurants of Sonic and In-N-Out Burger. Of all the fast food burger joints these are two that are unique in many ways, Sonic is a drive-in and In and Out burger offers a simple burger with a few options. Sonic Drive-In Upon entering the parking lot at the local sonic, customers are presented with three options for dining: 1. The classic Drive-In experience – the car pulls into a drive up & park menu board, once the occupants are ready to make their selections the driver presses a red button on the menu board. After a few moments the voice on the speaker takes the order which can then be paid by credit card at the menu board or in cash when the car hop (on roller skates) brings out the order. 2. The drive thru – every fast-food place has one of these, for customers on the go. Cars line up and place their order at the menu board. One unique thing about Sonic is that if they are backed up on an order they will help the cars behind that order without needing to have them move to a special parking area. The customer service people come out and collect payments and deliver orders to cars in line when it is not moving. 3. Walk-up – no restaurant would be complete without sit down dining, for Sonic this is outside on the patio, where each table has a menu board just like the drive in spots and orders are processed in much the same way. Sonic prepares each hamburger to order, offering “Ketchup, Mustard or Mayo” on each one, and since each order is a “special order” – there are no changes to the process when special orders are made. Hamburgers are cooked on a grill and assembled on a line that ensures that every burger gets the attention and condiments that the customer requested.
