Soon thereafter came the collapse of white colonialism. That minorities sought to improve their position within their society is not what concerns Mr. Schlesinger, however. In discussing this "unprecedented ... ethnic upsurge", he asserts that what "began as a protest against the Anglocentric culture ... became a cult, and today it threatens to become a counter-revolution against the original theory of America as "one people," a common culture, a
Running on Empty In his book, Running on Empty, Peterson recognizes that the hope for modifying the political incentives normally hinges on the changing and the selfish attitudes of voters who have self-interest on political process, hence engendering in vitriolic partnership (Peterson pg. 218). His proposal for the reformation of the budget processes, on the other hand, seems to be myopic, since the pork-barrel politics are disgraceful despite the fact that the reform for the budget processes was proved to be impossible. Peterson has placed a great weight concerning the present generation that is supposed by various obligations to posterity; he says that he is worried whether the social promises of today are binding on the future generation, and if it would be possible to
I believe that the unpatriotic aspects of the war is the main reason the book was banned. Americans see World War II as a moral war against senseless manslaughter that we won. To show how we also participated in senseless manslaughter ourselves would be hard to explain to
‘HHMM’, Hollywood, Harvard, McDonald’s, and Microsoft, were selling not only their products but also America's culture and values, the secrets of its success, to the rest of the world.' However, employing only hard power or only soft power in a given situation will usually prove inadequate. Nye utilizes the example of terrorism, arguing simply utilizing soft power resources to change the hearts and minds of the Taliban government would be ineffective and requires a hard power component. Nevertheless, in the Middle East, in the eyes of Islamic fundamentalists, the openness of Western culture is repulsive, which we have a term for it ‘anti-Americanism’. As a result, Joseph Nye, suggests that the most effective strategies in foreign policy today require a mix of hard and soft power resources, the ‘smart power’.
Mao criticised Khrushchev for his policies such as de-Stalinisation and his secret speech. He was also very critical of the policy of Peaceful Coexistence as he believed it was a way of being friendly with the United States (the enemy) and also Mao saw it abandoning millions of comrades struggling to free themselves of capitalist and imperialist oppression. This, therefore, made the USSR an ‘enemy’. How could two countries work together if they had such differing beliefs about how to run their countries? This problem had a big contribution to the split as they couldn’t agree on anything, and if they did, it was because their national interests were at risk.
The other songs were not so patriotic. Green Days song, “American Idiot,” is any thing but patriotic. They disagree and continually restate that they disagree with commercialism and the medias hold on America and the dreams that Americans have. This is clearly stated in the lines, “…Under the new media…” “…Television dreams of tomorrow” “…Now everybody do the propaganda” “…One nation controlled by the media.” The song “Amerika,” by Rammstein is against America in my opinion. It seems to me that they focus on the materialism that we have here in America and how we spread it all around the world where we influence.
Americanized Americanized composed by Bruce Dawe is a satirical poem that directly attacks the American ways of life and how countries are losing their cultural identity by conforming to the American standards. Americanized is also how the basic human relationships have been perverted by consumeristic culture, and how a consumer-driven society that dehumanizes its citizens and robs them of their individuality. Throughout the poem Dawe uses an extended metaphor: The mother being America and the child representing a smaller, developing country which is slowly being embedded with the American ways and values. Dawe uses irony within the title of the poem which sets the tone as it is spelt the American way, ‘Americanized’ with a ‘z’ instead of the Australian way ‘Americanised’ with a ‘s’. This reinforces the idea that we are losing our cultural identity by conforming to American standards including their way of spelling and punctuation.

The Intro of the essay asserts the notion that the English language has been disfigured by the human race and is on the residual decline as a resultant. Mr. Orwell attributes this downfall to politics and economic causes but goes on to outline his remedy to correct what he refers to as a “reversible” process. George Orwell goes on to cite passages from several prominent essays and articles, concluding on the similarities in their staleness of imagery and lack of precision. He criticizes the passages, stating that the incompetence and vagueness of such political writings desecrates correct English prose- construction. DYING METAPHORS.
Swift’s story portrays his animosity against the way England was changing. In George Orwell’s essay on the examination of “Gulliver’s Travel” he says, “Moreover, it is difficult not to feel that in his shrewder moments Gulliver is simply Swift himself, and there is at least one incident in which Swift seems to be venting his private grievance against contemporary society.” Swift’s critics have argued that he purely hates humankind, and Swift’s reply to these comments is that he only hates humankind’s folly (Chin). “Gulliver’s Travels” is a satire of the society of England during its publish, Swift ridicules the people of the time. This story is like playing a joke on someone, its subtly making fun of its readers, yet it is still popular, and how is that? Because these people were so naive and shallow, they could not see their own flaws.
