Shamika Hinnant Cultures & Values Prof. Wexler June 19, 2012 Family Narrative My sometimes awesome life began July 26th, almost 22 years ago on a Thursday evening. I entered the world joined by my twin sister, who cut the line and got here one minute before I did! On the day of my birth; President Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act, General Hospital taped its 7,000th episode, and the U.S. beat the Soviet Union 17-0 in baseball at Goodwill Games. Not a lot of things happened on this day, but it was still very eventful! I grew up just years before the dawning of a brand new millennium, the “Y2K”, and the supposed ending of the world. My generation, which is known as “the 90’s” just may be the most popular, (okay, so I’m biased!) Those of us who grew up during this decade are known as 90’s kids. I was brought up during the time of the “old” Nickelodeon, Spice Girl lollipops, the Goosebumps book series, Tales from the Crypt (my favorite show!), solving all problems with the best 2 out of 3 in “rock, paper, scissors”, Discovery Zone in Hudson Mall, and watching Saturday morning cartoons on the old WB 11 television station. These were good times, and still cherished memories that my friends and I still reminisce about! To me, I grew up during a really great, carefree time of life. We, (the exclusive 90’s Kid club!) came of age when; Rap music had just become mainstream [Tupac’s hit records can still be heard blasted through stereo systems today, and if an early 20-something tells you that they can’t finish the lyrics “Super Nintendo, Sega genesis” (Juicy, Notorious B.I.G.), then he/she is lying!], The Lion King which is an all-time classic was released (Mustafa was hated by everyone), antiapartheid activist Nelson Mandela was freed after spending 27 years as a political prisoner, and lastly, we partied like it was 1999!
