Application Project: Family as an Agent of Socialization It is a widely accepted fact that socialization is a method through which an individual acquires and inherits standards, habits, mannerisms, and principles of the social arrangement they live in (Agents I). Socialization is essential for creating an individual who is adept and proficient when interacting within a society, or civilization. The process of socialization is a critical element because it teaches one how to conduct his self and function in society. It is such an important process because it allows one to acquire skills needed to adhere to customs, traditions, and values. The process of socialization is learned through agents of civilization which allows a person to shape his place in society by learning social skills. Primary agents of civilization are, perhaps, the most important of socialization groups because they are the closest and most influential factors in an individual’s life. Family plays the most important role in a child’s life by molding the life and actions within society. This vital role of family in the socialization process will be discussed, along with changes to the American family, and how those changes originated. Differences in marriage and family life that are linked to class, race, gender, and personal choice will be elaborated on. Additionally, the positive and negative trends toward diverse families will be contested. Finally, the changing of trends toward traditional families, and how they would affect women’s rights will be speculated on Family is perhaps the most important agent of socialization primarily because they provide the first experiences of socialization.
