Happiness Fahrenheit 451 and Now The science fiction story Fahrenheit 451, is a novel about a fireman who burns books in a futuristic city. In this story, fireman Guy Montag starts fires instead of the norm of putting them out. The people in their society do not read books, or enjoy nature or their surroundings, or have meaningful conversations with others. Instead, they just drive around very fast, watch excessive amounts of television on wall-size sets, kind of like our flat screens today. Regardless of this, happiness is of central importance in this future world. The fire chief of this city is Captain Beatty, who is also a book burner. Even though he used to love literature and is very smart, he is against books and hates people who want to read books. “ A book is a loaded gun in the house next door. Burn it.” (pg.58) Captain Beatty tries to define what happiness is throughout the story. Some of the Captain’s quotes can be applied to what people in American find as happiness today. One particular quote puts some of today’s society into perspective, “More sports for everyone, group spirit, fun and you don’t have to think, eh? Highways full of crowds going somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, nowhere.” (pg.) To me, this quote touches upon the fact that people love to attend sports events and parties associated with sports events such as the upcoming super bowl, and how these events also affect traffic. It can take hours to attend sports events here in the bay area, by driving or by public transportation. People like to get out and enjoy events, which seem to make them happy, but people also get very impatient trying to park and navigate through the large crowds.
