The advertisement that I chose was a television commercial I saw a few months ago for the Apple iPhone 4. Using Television is a great medium to reach various target audiences. “It has an enormous reach—for example, in the United States, almost all households have a TV set (98 percent have one set and nearly two-thirds have two or more).” (Mullins, 2010, p. 353). The advertisement was quite effective in communicating the products benefits because the entire commercial revolved around FaceTime. FaceTime is an application on the iPhone 4 that allows users to video chat over a Wi-Fi connection to other iPhone 4 users. The benefits were clear because the commercial demonstrated the importance of families staying connected not only by phone, but also through video. The examples in the advertisement were very impactful. One example would be a mother showing her husband their baby’s face through the video chat, a guy in the military deployed overseas being able to see his girlfriend, and a wife on FaceTime, showing her busy husband how much fun the entire family is having at a birthday picnic. These examples clearly show the importance of families being able to communicate with each other on a more personal level when they are not able to be there to share many of life’s memories. The commercial is made to be touching because you can relate to a time where there would be a special moment and you weren’t able to be there in person. The target audience is clear in this advertisement. The advertisement was targeted at long distance relationships; family members that have too busy of a schedule, and loved one’s not being able to be in the same vicinity as their family to enjoy an important event.
