Hightower Professor: Dr. Kenneth Levitt June 1, 2012 Facebook vs. Twitter Introduction Sometimes we tend to compare one situation to another to try to get a clear understanding. Facebook and twitter can be compared to the old children’s story “the Tortoise and the Hare”. Some may not remember this child bedtime story told to many of us by one of our parents. This is a story or fable about an arrogant hare (rabbit) that loses a race to a tortoise (turtle) that was considered slow. The tortoise won the race because of his belief and purpose to reach a certain point. In this situation the tortoise, reach his point in victory. (Bilton, 2012) Synopsis of the Situation Facebook and Twitter are two of the most popular social network sites on the internet. They allow users to connect to with one another and be updated what is happening to their friends. The mission statement for facebook is probably a good approach to where facebook is now and will be in the future. The key to the situation is through the mission statement for facebook. (Pearce & Robinson, 2011) The mission of “facebook is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.” The statement is clear, short and to the point. Whereas, twitters mission statement is “To instantly connect people everywhere to what’s most important to them.” The statement made by twitter is rather vague and generic. Key Issues There is one element of facebook that we are aware of is that it is free to their users and they tract real time conversations like twitter.
