In the past few decades, modern technology has become more influential and life-changing with every year that passes. As a people we find ourselves in what some call, “the digital age” with the advances of technology that have vastly improved the way we interact with one another. In the film “The Social Network”, we are introduced to the beginning of the worldwide phenomenon of “facebook”, and the impact that it has had on our world. In the following essay, I will discuss the positive and negative effects that the current trend of social media has had, and what we can anticipate to happen in the future. In the film, we are introduced to the origin of Facebook which was founded by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg. He initially created Facebook to be a college social network, but now anyone thirteen and older can join. Users create a personal profile, list personal interests, list their contact information, view other user profiles, add other users as friends, post photos and exchange messages. It eventually became the juggernaut of social media, overpowering “Myspace” as the most popular way to interact with each other online. In today’s society there is always a way to communicate with one another without being face to face. Millions of people use Facebook daily. It is a place where we can keep in touch with old friends and family. It is also a place where people may spend too much time. Since social networking has become so popular, it has become a tool that people can use daily, but it’s something we need to be careful with. The major benefits that come from facebook, is that it allows people to stay in touch with family and friends. We can find childhood friends, past relationships, and long lost friends and family just by searching through Facebook. We can interact with friends and loved ones who live miles apart.
