Chinese sociologists Yong Li once pointed out: “The activities of people in the bureaucracy, can not keep a clear reason, when they invite those in power to eat.”(Yong Li, Social relations in China,2005,p.20-21) Food waste does harm to society, resources, environment and people’s health, especially for this country short of resources per capita, China. Waste is a crime. Food waste is a waste of arable land, water and labor resources. Food waste has also led to the loss of nutrients needed daily. According to the Department of Health.”It is estimated that each year the sum of Chinese food waste to provide approximately 8 million tons of protein and 6.3 million tons of fat.”(Department of Health ,2006) Resulting in waste of the table are many reasons. Many people, for the power, they order a lot of food to let those who have power know their sincerity. But they can not finish .Because of their reputation, the food is wasted. In China, this food waste is becoming worse. On the one hand, the Chinese people want a good face. They prefer order more dishes. On the other hand, they emphasis on consumer pomp. Civil servants are spending public funds. These are likely to cause the table to waste. So the word “face” is the root of the Chinese people to waste food. Restaurant customers in China, especially those who want to treat guests or those have the privilege to spend public money in slap-up restaurants, generally have such notions in mind that their face or prestige depends upon how much money they spend on dishes. Many people think treating his guests dinners and leaving many leftover dishes is also a kind of investment, otherwise business talks would be difficult.
