Tara 11-19-09 B-2 Extreme Sports Extreme sports started around the 1970s, when rock climbing and marathon running became popular. The popularity of extreme sports grew around the 20th century, when safety of modern life increased. Another reason for increased popularity was the enhancing of sport technology, for example, sticky rubber soled climbing shoes and advances in ski design allowed more skiers to perform extreme stunts that were thought to be impossible. Whitewater rafting is an example of an extreme sport. When doing this sport you are going to be using an inflatable raft to navigate a river or other bodies of water. This is usually done on whitewater or different degrees of rough water, in order to thrill and excite the raft passengers. The modern raft is basically an inflatable boat consisting of very durable, multi-layered rubberized fabrics with several air chambers. The length varies between 3.5 meter and 6 meters, the width between 1.8 meters and 2.5 meters. The expectation to this size is usually the packraft, which is designed as a portable single-person raft and may be as small as 1.5 meters long and weigh as little as 4 pounds. Bungee jumping is an activity that involves jumping off tall surfaces while connected to a large elastic cord. The tall structure is usually a fixed object, such as a building or crane, but it is also possible to jump off of a moveable object, such as a hot-air balloon. When the person jumps the cord stretches and the jumper flies upwards again as the cord snaps back, this motion happens repeatedly. It consists of a simple ankle attachment and a body harness, to back up the ankle attachment. Snowboarding is a sport that involves descending down a slope that is covered in snow on a snowboard attached to the rider’s feet using a special boot.
