Expository Essay “The Interlopers” and “The Gift of the Magi” has different ideas of literary terms. These two authors from the short story are from two different time and place. The story “The Interlopers” has a unique setting, which is in the eastern spurs of the Karpathian Mountains. It is about two feud family member (Ulrich and Georg) facing each other in the mountains. This happens because Ulrich has the land but Georg was jealous of him and Ulrich is angry that his enemy is hunting on his land. Later when they meet each other face to face on the Ulrich’s land with their guns. However, a tree falls on both men, they could only rely on how fast their men would come and be rescued first, and the other will die under the tree. After arguing a while, Ulrich requests Georg to be his friend. Nevertheless, when they hear footsteps of hope, it turns out to be a pack of wolves. They end up dying at last. The second story is “The Gift of the Magi”, sets place in New York City, US. Della and Jim are living in a harsh condition and they only have two possessions, which is Della’s lustrous hair, and Jim’s gold watch. On Christmas Eve, Della tries to find a way to give Jim a Christmas present. She later cuts her hair, which falls until her knees and sold it for 20 dollars. She buys a platinum watch chain for Jim. When Jim comes back to home, Della explains to him what has happened with her hair but then Jim gives Della a set of combs for her hair and Della gives Jim’s watch chain. However, Jim had sold his watch to buy the set of combs. These are two different stories however shares similarities of: Interpreting the author’s message of the character’s culture through the author’s cultural background influences the readers understanding about the story. The two author’s background is different from each other. This also affected the books that they wrote. The author
