The use of ‘Water” being the title highlights the essential need for it as well as linking with the religious aspect as he starts off by talking about how he would “construct” his own religion with “water” being the central use. The superior and mocking tone is shown as he thinks religion is man-made and easy to construct. The poem having no setting highlights how the persona Larkin has created is imagining it all yet is playing a God-like figure throughout as he “should” and “would” do this, showing the control he has. Larkin directs the poem mainly towards the Christian way of teaching in which “water” is significant, for example Jesus walked on water, water being used in baptisms and the washing of the feet meaning that the use of the term water could be to symbolise being washed clean, purity and born again. Larkin also refers to the “east” which is symbols for the beginnings and awakenings; it also refers to the churches traditionally being built in cross shapes, with the altar on the eastern side, facing towards Jerusalem. However, when the persona created talks about “congregate” creating an image of the gathering of people but also contrasts to other religions, as it implies that anyone can join. This could be to show that religion should be a personal lifestyle choice rather than forced upon. Similarly, in the poem “Dafydd ap Gwilym at Llanbadarn”, Abse uses a mocking tone as he mocks the youth belief and questions whether just because you go to church doesn’t stop you being distracted as he contrasts the urge over the rules. Abse uses colloquial language as well as vindictive language such as “Give them pox, Lord, and age” as if uses God to suggest that women are beautiful when they are young. He also finishes the poem with a humorous tone as he jokes that he is still “full of sperm. Oh what a waste!” showing that Abse sees religion as light-hearted and
