John Keats conveys the delight of nature in his poem by using a variety of poetic devices such as evocative language, structure and imagery. The poem ‘On The Grasshopper and The Cricket’ shows both, winter and summer, describing both seasons in nature. The summer section is introduced by “the poetry of earth is never dead” and the winter section is introduced by “the poetry of the earth is ceasing never”, echoing the summer section. Through this the poet shows that even though the parts are different they are also the same. While the summer is warm the winter is cold, yet they share a certain peacefulness throughout. The poem is a sonnet, a fourteen-line poem, which usually shows love for something or someone. In this case, it shows Keats passion and delight in nature. The meter of the poem gives it a certain rhythm, which makes it very fluent and gives it an appear as if nature is speaking to one through the poem. The rhythm also gives a flow to the entire poem, almost as if trying to create a sensation that some natural elements, such as a stream or wind, are talking. The first eight lines of the poem, the ones about summer, include words such as “luxury”, “pleasant” and “fun”, all of these convey a sense of delight as they are happy words that have a positive connotation. These lines also all add a feeling of cheerfulness and peaceful environment. The next six lines, the ones about winter, include words like “warmth” and “drowsiness” which also create a calm and joyous environment. Throughout ‘On The Grasshopper and The Cricket’ animals, plants and natural elements are being personified. For an example, the frost “has wrought a silence” which shows how relaxed and drowsy the winter is, this conveying a sense of glee.
