Role Playing Role playing techniques is used for human relations and leadership training. Its purpose is to give trainees an opportunity to learn human relations skills through practice and to develop insight into one’s own behaviour and its effect upon others. Generally under this method, a conflict situation is artificially constructed and two or more trainees are assigned different roles to play. In this role play unlike written drama no dialogue is given, a participant has to play naturally. A situation is being given to participants and in that particular situation a role is assigned to the participant. A limited time period will be given to them to prepare for the role and then act accordingly. For example a subordinate is trying to convince his boss on some issue or a salesman is giving a presentation to customer. After playing the role the discussion held on how the roles were handled by the role players. Role play has wide utility in leadership and management development, communication skills, improvement of interpersonal relationship and team building etc. it can provide an interesting medium for observing different behaviour and evaluating their experience and there is huge potential of learning in this method. Some activities or business games also utilizes indirectly as a role play, e.g. ask 20 to 30 people to stand in a straight line in ascending order as per your month and year of birth without verbal communication. While participants are doing this activity, trainer or facilitator can observe participants are playing some role, some participants leads from the front, some are very good listeners, some communicate their idea clearly, few participants confront others view, etc. in this indirect role play, participants behave naturally and personality traits can be identified.
