There have been so many changes in the area of “caregiving”. Progressing from an uneducated idea that mental illness was a criminal act and that segregation from society, into asylums, the only care they deserved, to years later, where society became more advanced and there was a move away from seclusion and a shift towards reintegration. However, during this period those with disability, mental illness and in most cases just old age were still treated poorly by the government. Care was primitive and such people were seen as “patients” implying a disposition of disease or being unwell and therefore in the need of medical treatment. They were mainly looked after in hospitals and were regarded as second class citizens who were deemed not to have the same rights as those “able bodied” and those of “sound mind”. However as society developed it became more affluent, much more civilised, but more importantly educated. It began to see people with disabilities/mental illness etc. to have the same rights as everyone else and The Human Rights Act 1998 and The Mental Capacity Act (2005) were introduced to protect such rights of anyone. But even before such acts were introduced the idea was shifting from “patients” being generically diagnosed and treated, to “service users” who were seen as individuals in their own right with their own rights, choices and ideas. This ideology stems from the Humanistic perspective within psychology which looks at the whole person when looking at their behaviour. In any health care environment we always look at what the person needs, but it is how we meet these needs that’s as important. A humanist believes that each individual is unique and therefore has their own unique way in which they perceive things. It takes a subjective view as opposed to an objective one.
